Discover how to turn drawings into illustrations that tell a story. Learn the principles of composition, create engaging characters and design environments that bring ideas to life with clarity, personality and purpose. You'll begin making images that don't just look good—they communicate.

Compose • Design • Communicate

Weeks 7-8: Narrative, Materials & Creative Expression

Explore the power of storytelling through comics, sequential images, texture and materials. Experiment with different ways of making images while developing confidence in your creative decisions and discovering how process, play and exploration lead to stronger illustration.

Experiment • Express • Refine

Weeks 9-10: Visual Voice, Refinement & Growth

Bring everything together as you complete a finished illustration and reflect on your creative journey. FAQ's

Who is Launchpad for?

Launchpad is designed for aspiring and early-stage illustrators who want to build strong creative foundations, develop their confidence and discover their own approach to illustration. You don’t need an established style or professional experience to take part — and if you’re a few years into your illustration journey and would love a creative refresher, you’re very welcome here too!

Do I need any experience?

Not at all. Launchpad is about developing your skills through observation, experimentation and regular practice. We'll start with the fundamentals and help you become more confident as the course progresses.

What will I learn?

Across 10 weeks, you'll explore drawing and observation, shape and form, colour, composition, character design, environments, visual storytelling, materials and texture, and developing your visual voice. You'll bring everything together by creating finished work and the beginnings of a portfolio.

How is the course structured?

Launchpad runs over 10 weeks, with weekly lessons, practical creative exercises and prompts, guest masterclasses and opportunities for feedback. Each week builds on the last, taking you from drawing fundamentals through to developing finished illustrations.

Who will be teaching the course?

Launchpad is led by Lisa Hassell, Founder of Inkygoodness, alongside four guest sessions with established professional illustrators. Each guest brings a different perspective and creative practice to the programme.

How much time do I need to set aside?

We recommend setting aside a few hours each week to watch the lessons and work through the creative exercises. You can adapt the amount of time you spend on your work around your own schedule.

What materials do I need?

A sketchbook and basic drawing materials are enough to get started. You’ll be encouraged to experiment with different tools, textures and materials throughout the course, and digital drawing is absolutely encouraged too. You can work in the way that feels most natural to you — there’s no need to invest in expensive new materials.

Will this help me find my illustration style?

Rather than putting pressure on you to immediately “find a style,” Launchpad will help you begin recognising the colours, shapes, materials, subjects and creative decisions you naturally gravitate towards. The goal is to start developing a visual voice that feels personal to you.

Will sessions be recorded?

Yes, everything is recorded. You'll get 12 months access to all course materials, replays and the community.

I'm not based in the UK - can I still join?

Absolutely. The course is fully online and open to illustrators worldwide. If the live sessions fall outside your time zone, you’ll be able to watch the recordings at a time that works for you.

What will I leave the course with?

You'll leave with stronger illustration foundations, greater creative confidence, new work for your portfolio and a clearer understanding of your emerging visual voice — plus a practical plan for continuing your illustration practice beyond Launchpad.
