Our self paced editorial comic illustration course gives you access to two creative briefs set by New York Times Art Directors Sarah Williamson and Kathy Lee and three Masterclasses with illustrators Aysha Tengiz, Bianca Beneduci Assad & Hyesu Lee exploring comic illustration!
Here's what you'll be working on:
- An editorial comic inspired by the theme of Wellness set by Sarah Willamson, Freelance Art Director at New York Times Well.
- An editorial comic based on the Connections word puzzle set by Kathy Lee, Senior Art Director at New York Times Games.
- Drawing Exercises set by Aysha Tengiz & Bianca Benduci Assad to flex your skills and explore various techniques to create characters, stories and find your voice as illustrators.
- A bonus brief and framework to create a 4-panel comic on a topic of your choice!
- Plus access recorded lessons on Ideation & Vignettes, Character Development & Visual Storytelling lead by Inkygoodness to empower you to illustrate personal stories through the medium of comics.

Our illustration masterclasses will explore the creative process behind comic illustration as we unpack work for editorial publications to lift the lid on how they work, and give you advice and insight on how to craft a career in illustration.
Our speakers will also set drawing exercises to help you brain storm ideas, deepen your understanding of character design and learn the art of observational drawing and how to take inspiration from the every day to craft short stories that embrace positivity and light hearted humour.

Let's meet our speakers
Masterclass Speaker: Aysha Tengiz
Aysha Tengiz is an illustrator, designer and animator based in London. Her previous clients include The New York Times, King’s College London and The Washington Post. Her work is colourful and playful. Often combining illustration with textiles to create knitwear sold through independent shops and her online website.
Aysha presents a masterclass on Visual Storytelling for our comic illustration challenge, discussing her inspirations and influences, and a deep dive into her creative process. Expect to learn about illustration for publishing and editorial as she presents creative work for clients such as Harvard Business Review and New York Times, alongside taking a look at selected passion projects which have inspired her creativity.
Masterclass Speaker: Bianca Beneduci Assad
Bianca Beneduci Assad is an award-winning Brazilian visual artist based in London. With over a decade of experience, including a senior designer role at Buck, her work is boldly playful and rooted in concept-driven design.
Drawing from her background in animation for shows like Cartoon Network’s The Amazing World of Gumball, she now channels her focus into innovative visual storytelling through illustration and design.
Bianca presents a brand new illustration talk and masterclass on Character Design where she unpacks the secrets to crafting characters with humour, personality and humour. Bianca will also present a variety of personal and client projects, taking a deep dive into her creative process for clients including Time Out and It’s Nice That.
Masterclass Speaker: Hyesu Lee
Hyesu Lee was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. She lived in Seoul until her mid-twenties, and went to study abroad in the UK, where her illustration journey began. She graduated from the University of Arts London with a BA (Hons) Illustration, then moved to New York City where she went on to earn an MFA from the School of Visual Arts.
Hyesu has been based in Brooklyn, New York and going about her life as an illustrator, artist, muralist, comic artist and educator ever since. She has collaborated with various clients across many platforms all over the world – creating illustrations for brands, magazines, public murals, and packaging.
Hyesu presents an illustration talk and masterclass on the joy of play, where she shares her insider knowledge, experience and creative process behind some of her most popular illustrated comics for leading magazines and publications, and the importance of crafting personal projects that spark joy!
